Chapter Nine

Van

I was first again in the kitchen. I'd asked the kids some of the breakfasts they were used to having, so when they woke up there was oatmeal and a tray of bacon already cooking. The oatmeal had instructions on the container, and cooking the bacon had required me knowing how to turn the oven on. Which I did now.

Before the OAC, my alpha father was never around, and I'd been left to fend for myself. I knew how to use a microwave, not that there was one in Hudson's kitchen.

As I set the table and listened to the pitter-patter of the kids and Hudson getting up in the morning overhead, I thought about the night before. The fight, the pig sty, and all that had come after. Staying quiet during Hudson's argument with Rocky had been difficult, but I'd looked at Puck, Mav, and Shiloh and had known they needed to be in a different room. They'd still been able to hear it, but seeing and hearing and just hearing felt different.

But after, I hadn't expected the torture Hudson had felt. The insecurity. In that moment, I'd wanted to push him to see there had been a different way for him to respond to Rocky's revelation, but I hadn't expected him to be so contrite. The pain that rolled off of Hudson as I walked up to the sty had been far stronger than the annoyance and juvenile rage that had radiated from Rocky's room.

I honestly hadn't expected that, a controlling alpha with his heart in the right place.

And then in the bath, there had been all that talk of belonging, and in the moment, I'd been all in. Now that the sun had risen and the bacon was crisping, I only knew that I didn't want to think about the time when I would have to leave. But it wouldn't be for a bit longer anyway, so I didn't have to.

Hudson entered the kitchen first, I handed him a steaming mug of coffee before turning to take a drink from my own. He raised an eyebrow at the mug but took a sip. I watched his neck muscles swallow He made a noise low in his throat. "Perfect," he rumbled and our eyes met.

And it was like we were replaying last night's events together. Our own private movie activated by eye contact.

"Did you sleep well?" Hudson asked, his voice deep.

"I did. Very well," I replied with a smirk. I'd been the one after to insist on sleeping in my own bed. My head had been spun so tight after that mind-blowing orgasm that I'd needed the extra hours to relax. For once, the screams that normally haunted me had stayed quiet. In fact, they'd been quiet for a few days.

"I'm not sure if you've noticed," Hudson continued conversationally, "that my bathtub in the master bedroom is much larger, with jacuzzi jets."

I imagined our limbs entwined together as we floated in his tub, the jets massaging our bodies while we clung to one another.
